Continuing Medical Education Platform for Medical Professionals
About the Client
Our client is a Continuing Medical Education (CME) provider and the creator of the ExchangeCME eLearning platform for physicians. The project is government-sponsored, meaning all training programs and certifications are provided free of charge to medical professionals.
CME programs are regulated by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Their goal is to maintain and improve physicians’ competencies, address knowledge gaps, and introduce new medical practices and innovations.
CHALLENGE
Building a Compliant and Accessible CME Platform
In many U.S. states, physicians are required to complete a defined number of CME credits each year to maintain their medical licenses. These programs must follow strict accreditation rules, provide measurable educational outcomes, and issue valid certificates.
At the same time, doctors have extremely limited time, making in-person education difficult. The challenge was to create an online CME platform that:
- meets regulatory requirements
- supports structured learning and certification
- is convenient for busy medical professionals
- enables both online and live educational activities
SOLUTION
We developed a web-based CME platform that enables medical professionals to complete accredited courses, attend live events, track credits, and receive certificates – all in one system.
The platform supports both online and offline learning formats and provides tools for administrators and course authors to manage content and monitor learning outcomes.
Key features include:
Interactive Online Activities
Live Event Registration
Additional Learning Resources
Student Profile
Admin CMS
Progress Tracking Reports
Follow-Up Newsletters
ONLINE LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Each medical topic is delivered as a structured learning activity. To earn credits and certificates, users must complete all steps in sequence, ensuring compliance with accreditation requirements.
If a user fails the test, they are redirected back to the educational content before being allowed to retry, ensuring proper knowledge acquisition.
The learning flow includes:
Pre-Questionnaire
Learning Activity (Video or Presentation)
Post-Questionnaire
Evaluation
Registration for live events
Physicians can browse upcoming live events and register directly through the platform. Each event is associated with a specific number of CME credits, which are automatically added to the user’s profile after attendance.
Resources for additional learning
The platform provides supplementary educational materials, including:
- presentation slides
- external references and suggested reading
- clinical guidelines
- interactive materials and eBooks
All resources are centralized and easily accessible.
Student profile
Each user has a personal profile where all learning activity is stored, including:
- completed courses
- registered live events
- earned CME credits
- downloadable certificates
This allows physicians to easily track their progress and maintain documentation for licensing purposes.
ADMIN CMS
Administrators manage the platform through a dedicated CMS, which supports:
- user management
- course and activity creation
- questionnaire setup
- live event scheduling
- content updates
This enables efficient ongoing expansion of the educational catalog.
Reports to track the progress
Admins and course authors can access detailed analytics, including:
- course popularity
- completion rates
- test results and scores
- challenging course sections
The system also tracks registrations for live events and aggregates data from polls and surveys.
Follow-up newsletters
The platform sends automated follow-up emails containing additional tests some time after course completion. This allows physicians to reassess their knowledge and helps educators measure the long-term effectiveness of training.
